My birth name is Lampson.
My 5th grandfathers name is William Lampson
He was born in 1803 in
Bridgewater Windsor Vermont and died in Wisconsin 1851
This a dead end. I need help finding his father. Referred to @Midwest by Admin.

Someone once attempted changing his name to Lawson. Please do not go down that road again. Even though she still attaches those records to our line.

Marianne; Thank you for your question. We will help you anyway we can. It would make our research easier if you would provide William's FamilySearch record ID number so we can see what resources you have already accessed. His ID number is a seven character string located just to the right of his name at the top of his record.

In looking at your William Lampson, this could be pretty tough to find. There weren't death records in Wisconsin at the time he died, and the vital records for Vermont where he was born and married are spotty and incomplete. Though there's a birth record for his wife, it's possible that he wasn't recorded in the birth records. I'm not seeing a marriage document for him either. So it will take some more digging to identify his family. It's likely that you won't find a document that names his parents directly, but there's a good chance you can find enough indirect evidence that you can point to who the most likely family was for him. Probate records and land deeds may prove helpful in this case.

A few ideas that come to mind:

You can locate him in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 census records, and look for Lampson families in the same places he lived and see if you can find a connection there between him and those families.

If you can find a marriage records for him that names a specific place of marriage (an actual document not just what it says in online trees), then you can look for Lampson families in that same area and try to connect him.

You can locate land deeds for him in the areas where he lived and see if there are any references to family members in them, names of witnesses, or any reference to what town in Vermont he came from.

You can look for Lampson families in the same area that his wife was from and study those families to see if you can find a connection to any of those families.

Marianne; You may also want to check alternate spellings of his surname. Lampton comes to mind. Recorders sometimes misspelled names.

Yes this is how the sister got the idea that we were Lawson. But it is obvious from his children’s doc that we are Lampson for the last 5 generations. I do not know how to find land deeds probate and this other docs she suggested. I’m sorry I’m new at research

We were all new at one time. I'm still not proficient with deeds and probate docs. To get started on Vermont probate records go to this FS Wiki link: https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Vermont_Probate_Records

Would you happen to have a link to those census years the other sister mentioned. I’m not sure how to get them online from that area

    To KMSWard KMSWard

i got all your links to the census work but when I go into this blog area it says that your posts were all deleted 😫

I so want to see the census where you saw Williams Lampson at age 3 Please please please sent me that link.

also I see a Horace Lampson listed with William. This might be a brother or father.

I have no way of telling what the numbers 1,2, and 3 along this census means because the topic of the column they are written in does not show.

do you know what those columns represent I know it’s usually children in age categories but I would sure like to know the catagory
