Belated Pioneer Day Post
one interesting project I did was to take my surname
and document the earleist "pioneers" in each state of the union with that surname.

It seems the Yanceys were always on the frontier borders.

Dennis, I don't know how you do it! You come up with some of the most creative ways to learn about your surname.
This is an intriguing idea. My main surnames are not very common, so I don't think that I could come up with someone from each state. However, if I did some research on the surnames and different locations, I think I might find some interesting connections. I think I might consider this challenge!

just do a census lookup by state and surname.
the lesser known surnames are probably easier to work with.
what are some of your surnames?

This particular exercise is a great one for anyone doing a "One Name Study" - as a gauge to see just how extensive and complete their family records are.
If a person can go through this exercise and with these names - be able to identify most of the people on the chart - and show how they are inter-related it is very good sign that their research is quite comprehensive and complete. For even less common surnames like Yancey - such a study - can take various decades of work and an incredible amount of time and effort. But after such studies mos people with that surname will be able to leverage the research done and the whole family can then be seen as one interconnected unit.
(Though truth is most surname groupings - are often composed of many different subgroups that often dont have the same genetic/historical connection - but somehow ended up with the same surname.)
also analysis of African Americans and whites within a surname grouping can also be very revealing as to connections or not and inter-relations.

For Yetter - you can find the surname in just about every state
The surname EAST is very comparable to the surname Yancey in how common it is.
In the United Kingdom - you could do a similar research as to what I did for Yancey in US
