Thanks Patricia! I too know the value of newspapers. I would love it if people would share some examples of articles that they find that help add a story to their family.
I found an obituary this morning in a newspaper. I have been searching for this one for so many years. This is proof that new newspapers are being made available all the time. I keep trying to find the same things and suddenly they appear.
Did I ever tell you about the time....... that I found the article about my great great grandfather that shot himself in the finger to get attention? It made the news.....the tale was surely embarrassing for his family. Who would have thought that I would find it more than a century later. It was quite a tale......

My Great-Great Uncle Frederick Maish was a cattle baron in the late 1800's in Arizona and also served as Mayor of Tucson for two terms. He died in 1913 and some reports say he died in poverty and others say he was cared for by his neighbors. We may never know the truth.0 -
What a sad tale. It is a shame that anyone lives in dire poverty with no one to care for them.
Where did you read that he was cared for by the neighbors?
I would presume that you could do property searches for his name, if you wanted to dig into this. Have you looked for a will? This might tell more information too.

It sounds like the way to verify which is true is to do some probate and property searches. It is interesting that this retraction was posted.

I did find Frederick's will which named his brother, James P.K. Maish (my great-great grandfather) as executor of the will. Proceeds of the will were to be granted to James' two children, James and Anna who were born to his second wife.

It sounds like he had lost a lot of material wealth, and maybe that would make him seem to be in dire straights according to those that knew him when he had wealth. I think I would tend to believe the retraction then.
