My uncle fought in the South Pacific during World War II. He served with men from all over the United States - some from cities - some from rural areas. For many of these men, they were raised during the Great Depression when crops were sparse and money was even more sparse. He often said that some of the men said 'Fighting in a war ain't so bad. It's the first time I had a pair of shoes and three square meals a day.' My uncle was strafed with machine gun fire at the invasion of Leyte - left for dead on the beach - and only discovered still living the next day when the stretcher bearers were picking up the dead.. He was in a hospital in Hawaii for a long time when one of the men in his company walked in to the hospital, turned white and remarked "You are supposed to be dead. I thought I was seeing a ghost.
