I am trying to trace an elusive ancestor for my wife.

His name is James Bartholomew Nelson and states on crew lists as coming from Fogo and also from Cape Verde. He was born around 1793, is catholic and arrived in Australia around 1814 on board the Brig Active. This boat was purchased by the Rev Samuel Marsden and then sailed between Australia and New Zealand. James had land in Australia in 1816. Cannot find anything including marriage birth or death records that provide proof. Not sure how to look in Cape Verde or where. Any help would be great;y appreciated

There are a few resources for Cape Verde listed in the FamilySearch Wiki. Have you tried these?

Knowing that James was Catholic might also prove useful. Have you tried searching church records?
