Any help locating a Christian Petersen in Omaha, Nebraska?
Hi everyone,
I have an odd problem: I cannot locate one ancestor, Christian Petersen, in the 1910 US census. The thing is that I think I knew exactly where he was, and still cannot find anything! I was wondering if anyone was better at searching than I am or if anyone has any advice.
A quick rundown of the facts:
- Born in 1961 in Aalborg, Denmark.
- Left in 1905 to the US
- In 1909 his nephew left Denmark and in the NYC passenger manifest, the point of contact in the US he lists is for Christian Petersen. The address given is Jackson Street. The number is kind of hard to read but I think it's either 719 or 919.
- In 1920 he was residing at 2016 Cuming Street. I don't know what kind of place this was, but there were a lot of foreign "roomers" living there. I think he was sick at this time, too.
- He died in 1924 after being bedridden for years.

Have you tried checking the City Directories? I have found information about individuals that included a forwarding address. I have also found marriage and death dates and other significant information.
There are many places to locate City Directories. You might try:

or check Ancestry, or do some internet searching.

Ancestry didn't turn anything up, and city directories might help if I can figure out access. One thing I did notice was that in 1910 the nephew and wife are living with someone named "Christine" Petersen. The age and gender are wrong but it is possible that they just messed it up that badly?

I have seen some census records that have terrible guesses at ages. I haven't seen as many mistakes in gender, but I can see how the similar name would make you wonder. Can you research Christine and see if you can find her in other records that connect her to the same people or location? Can you try to prove or disprove that she exists? Obviously, if you can't find any other record for Christine, it doesn't mean that she doesn't exist; but if you did find her you might want to learn more about her.

Thanks! I'll give it a try. I know they messed up ages a lot but I was a bit surprised about the gender. Let's see what I find.
