Where have you found each of these names? Both in the Netherlands or John in the US and Jan in the Netherlands. If the latter, then John is probably an anglicised form of the Dutch Jan.

Sorry, I forgot to include that. I found both in the Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Jamaica, Queens, NY. In this record they use both Jan and John. Thanks for your help!

Whenever you are searching for a person with one of these names, always consider the other name. You will never know what people in the US will write for non-English names.

Thank you, I did find in that church record the same person listed as Jan (for the first child's baptism) and then the later baptisms in the same family he was listed as John. The same wife was on each of these baptisms.

John is the English version of Jan. It is the same as Joannes, Johannes and in French it is Jean. The point is to use the name which appears on the birth record.
