Civil War pension files
Anyone know how to read the pension files? My great great grandfather is listed on the same page with 2 other men?!? Then there’s one with his name that says canceled then there’s another one which looks like it’s the one that stuck... then there’s one for his widow that shows when she died ... but I’m not sure if I’ve assumed the correct date of death for him (which I’ve entered on find a grave and all my trees) but I’m not 100% sure that I have the right date, also his name is spelled wrong on some records he is listed as Jared S. Dougherty or Juard Dougherty when it should be Gerard A. Dougherty...and why can’t I find ONE SINGLE BIT of other info about him other than a census record or 2? Finding everyone else has been cake compared to him. Ugghhh.... 🤦🏻♀️ Gerard Adolphus Dougherty (known as G. A. Dougherty) b. 1827 VA d. 1898? MO? He and his wife Mary Ann Harding Dougherty lived in IL and MO, after his death she and her adult children (along with their spouses and children) moved to OK. He is buried at meadville cemetery in Linn County MO, he has a union veterans tombstone but no dates ... I can’t find a record of his tombstone application either (would appreciate help w that also:) anyone experienced in reading pension records? Please don’t direct me to the National Archives cause that hasn’t been helpful at all unfortunately:( thank you! 😊

Notice the General Note at the bottom... If this is him, he served from Illinois and the link shows where he served during the war.

Correct @Glenn R Whicker i have all that info...I can’t seem to pin down who his parents were or his exact dod... I believe it to be the date I added to findagrave based on the records I’ve posted here but I’m not certain, and hoping someone can tell me if that’s correct as it appears to be sept 23 1898
