Indiana Adoption - Virgil Herbert Walker ID KVGW-FSH
My paternal grandfather was born in Brownsburg, Hendricks, Indiana in 1901. His birth father was Ora Clarence Gray. However, Virgil, is in the 1910 Census, living with his mother Daisy and J.M. Walker and is listed as son. Daisy was married to Ora in 1900 following the death of first husband William Gregg. From the time of the 1910 Census forward, Virgil's last name is listed as Walker. I am unable to find any evidence that Virgil was adopted by John Walker. Any suggestions on how I would find a record.

I think the best thing to do, would be to read up on adoption laws in Indiana, especially during that time. When my mother remarried, people knew me as my step dads daughter. I went from being Annette Unrau to Annette Glen. No one asked about papers when I was little. This didn't happen until I went to school. And even then, in school I wrote my name as Annette Glen. It wasn't until I opened a bank account, got a drivers licence, renewed my German passport, where I HAD to show proper identification. My step dad was going to adopt me, meaning legally give me his surname, but, he died before that happened. I think I would check in with local historical society in that area, and see what information they might have.
When I did a quick search on adoption in Indiana, it provided some insights, but it was different in that this was concerning infants being given into adoption. The links didn't seem applicable, but you could check. You could also check Judy Russell's blog, "The Legal Genealogist." She might have something there.

I have sent an email to the State Health Department in Indiana to inquire as to ability to search conducted for Virgil. I like your idea about checking with the local Historical Society.😎
