Is there a way to just ask an individual a question without being in the forum?

If you are talking about asking another member of the community, you can click on that person's name and send a message directly to him/her.

If you want to ask someone at FamilySearch, you can go to "help" on the familysearch.org website [top right] and send an e-mail to the general help desk, who will assign it to the appropriate queue.

if you want to omit the forum, you also can ask for the e-mailadress, altough

some people do not like to do that.
