Hello,

My grandfather's last name was Travushkin. It seems that he or his family came from Lithuania, but he was born in Russia in 1910. I tried to find this family name in Lithuania but with no success. Is it possible that this last name has a different Lithuanian version? Thank you.

@ZSUZSANNAKISS7 There is information and guide on FamilySearch Wiki - Lithuania Naming Customs combined with Russian influence that might be helpful.

I also put your question to an AI platform (CoPilot) and it returned the following:

Why You’re Not Finding “Travushkin” in Lithuania

    • Russian Roots: The suffix -ushkin is a classic Russian diminutive/patronymic ending, common in surnames like Pushkin. Lithuanian surnames rarely use this form.
    • Lithuanization of Names: When Russian or Polish families lived in Lithuania, their surnames were often adapted to Lithuanian grammar. For example, Ivanov → Ivanovas, Petrov → Petrovas.
    • Spelling Variants: Cyrillic “Травушкин” could be transliterated as Travushkin, Travuškin, or even Travuškinas in Lithuanian records. Searching only the English spelling will miss these.
    • Lithuanian surnames change endings based on gender and marital status, so you may need to search multiple forms.
