Hello.

Can someone help me with the entry for Johan Frederik Johansen? I cannot read the second sentence in particular.

I read the second line and the first few words of the 3rd line as "he died the 24th of April 1817. 84 years old. The last 12 years he was ________ "

The 4th and 5th lines read "he was married to Elisabeth Hansdatter, Johansen ________ died 1817, 87 years old". I think that the Johansen following her name is her married name.

This is a really weird record. It mentions two deaths in 1817 but this is the birth book for Bråby parish covering the years 1723-1814!

In actuality, Johan Frederik Johansen and his wife, Elisabeth Hansdotter Johansen died in Ulse parish (a neighboring parish) in Præstø county. According to Elisabeth's death record, she died 13 December 1816 and was buried 20 December 1816 (rather than 1817). That death date (1817) is according to the Lutheran Liturgical calendar which begins with the 1st Sunday in Advent (4th Sunday before Christmas). Perhaps this article in the FamilySearch Wiki will make it a little more clear: https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Lutheran_Liturgical_Calendar . Basically, just think of the new year (1817) starting in December rather than on January 1st! But it is still actually 1816 in our calendar.

@Norm Baker, thank you so much for all the links and information!! Also, thank you for explaining about the different calendar. I never would've thought of that!

Learning that sentence references "the last 12 years," maybe it's talking about his pension, or an aspect of his life after he retired. I had wondered if it was talking about his children, as some of the other entries did, so that clears that up for me.
