Before Michigan was a state - any ideas or thoughts?

I have a brick wall, French Canadian (FC) ancestors who came from Ontario to Michigan. I am trying to connect my ancestors to the larger family in Quebec. The problem is that I am struggling to find records.

I am looking for Louis Derosier (Desrosiers) and his wife Julia de la riviere married before 1830. Their son Louis born about 1830 was married in 1850 in Goderich Ontario to Adeline Mousseau. I have looked in Quebec with no success for Louis and his family. I have traced Adeline and her Mousseau family back to Ste-Elisabeth Quebec.

The story was that the FC families came from Quebec. I have read some stories that there was FC living in that area before 1840. Goderich was Native lands before 1820. Locals are adamant that there were no non-natives in Goderich before 1840.

I have found some Riviere's in Michigan and Desrosiers in Detroit and Vincennes, so I have turned to look in the Midwest Territory records and been reviewing the information at the Burton Collection.

I looked in every Ontario Catholic parish that had records back before 1840. I am going to start looking in Michigan and Indiana as well.

Appreciate any feedback or ideas..

You might try getting this disccussion going in the Canada Research group to see if they can assist you at all. Sounds like you have a firm grasp on where to look and just need that piece of luck that may come from one of the discussion contributors. I also see the Ohio Genealogical society keeps records for the time Michigan and Ohio were part of the North West territories. Societies of the Families of the Old Northwest Territory.
