i have thousands of relatives popping up in My Heritage and GEDmatch, how can I differentiate between paternal and maternal? I know my mother's name, and her 1st hubbys name, but I don't think he's my dad. All these folks can't be maternal, surely someone on my dad's side has done DNA testing. Thank you all in advance!

On Ancestry there is a tab in the DNA section that tells you which parent the relative comes from. I do not know how that works on "My Heritage". I would think you should be able to ask that question on My Heritage and they could tell you how to determine between your father and mother or Grandfather and Grandmother.

You may want to build your mother's tree, so you can recognize matches on her side. Look at online genealogy sites like FamilySearch and Ancestry to find your mother's parents, grandparents, siblings, and so forth. Once you start identifying your mother's side matches, you can know that the folks that do not match those matches are probably from your bio dad's side.

If you want a search angel to help, DNAngels.org will find birth parents for free. Also there are Facebook group search angels also.
