Sumiswald BE - Baptism - 1704 - Bichsel - Barbara
This is similar to a discussion I submitted a few days ago. At the URL below is the baptism record of my 6th great grandmother Barbara Bichsel. It was recorded in the Sumiswald Parish baptism register, not the Auswartige Burger register. Because of the different handwriting, her entry appears to have been inserted after the other entries on this page were recorded. It appears to me that she was baptized on gallen tag (25 July) 1704 "zu Hochstetten". I read this to mean she was baptized in another parish = Hochstetten. However, I cannot find a parish in Switzerland named Hochstetten. I searched the Family History Library catalog and the State Archives of Bern (which thanks to you I now have another source to research in.) Am I reading this record correctly or is there a Hochstetten Parish? if so, any idea how I can find records for it? Your help would be appreciated.

I agree with your assessment. The problem is that places are often spelled differently in colloquial language and, above all, pronounced differently from the official spelling. In Barbara's entry, I can see two well-hidden dots that turn Hochstetten into Höchstetten. The place and parish in question is Grosshöchstetten.

I found Barbara's baptism record in Grosshochstetten! Thank you for steering me in the right direction.

The date is a bit confusing: Sumiswald gives "Gallen tag" - better "Gallus-Tag" - which would be 16 Oct (not 25 July) - but in Grosshöchstetten 09 Nov is documented. Possibly born 16 Oct and baptised 09 Nov?
