Hello, my name is Mark Bauernfeind. The family name that I hope to learn more about in this group is Van Rossum. That is a very Dutch name, obviously, but please bear with me for a moment. My 3x great grandfather was Albert Bernard Van Rossum (27 Jul 1827 - 16 Aug 1914). He arrived in America 1848-1850, married in Cleveland in 1854, had a son there in abt 1855, then relocated his family to Wisconsin during the next year or so. His second son, John Jacob (11 Jun 1856 - 12 May 1917) was born in Green Bay WI. John Jacob is my 2x great grandfather. His daughter Mary Louise recorded a family history, which says Albert Bernard was "born in west Prussia of Holland parents". I only discovered Albert's marriage record this week, which is very exciting. I hope to find his origins in West Prussia because there is information online that leads me to believe he may have been part of a Dutch farming community somewhere in the lowlands that border the Vistula river. That's a very large area, I realize, and it is a daunting task to even try to narrow down the possibilities. Thus, my post to this research group. Any and all guidance would be greatly appreciated as I try to find a starting point. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to join this group!

Mark, there was a Mennonite Community from Netherlands, their records together with some Luthrean records in Vistula Delta. If you search on Internet or Wikipedia, you will learn that with their experience of draining the watery lands in Netherlands, they did the similar work with Vistula Delta.

We searched in mgr.mennonite.genealogy.com/Prussia/Danzig_Records.htm but did not find your ancestor Rossum name. Without the written or printed IDs the surname might have been altered. You may continue searching there. Or you may contact Gdansk Archives apgda@gdansk.ap.gov.pl They will charge for the research. In ancestry.com there is Albert Rossum from Danzig, Landkreise (Gdansk) Poland, you may search ancestry.com for free in familysearch center near the town where you live.

Thank you very much Eppich Maria! Learning that there any mention at all of the Van Rossum name or a variant thereof in Poland is great. This ancestor is a difficult one to find.
