The surviving record id is LHG8-CXW.

James Spurlin of Pike Co GA, married to Nancy Michel and son of William Spurlin is buried in New Hebron Cemetary. His bible records are available online documenting his family. Born 20 Jun 1802; died 18 Nov 1887.

James M. Spurlin of Fayette Co GA, married to Mary "Polly" Williams and likely son of Elijah Spurlin is buried in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetary. Born 15 Apr 1802; died 30 Jul 1887. I have photographs of his bible documenting his family.

Both men have wills recorded in their respective counties which corroborate the bible records. Both men are grandsons of John Spurlin of North Carolina b~1740 d~1822. Census records of both families are available from 1840 through 1880 which also corroborate the families.

Since it appears that no other edits have been made to the profile since the merges on 11 July 2025, it is fairly easy to restore the profiles that were merged away, if an error has been made.

The issue is not with the Improved Person Change Log but with possible incorrect merges made by a contributor.

@Ray Spurlin Thanks for the message.

I have looked a little at James (LHG8-CXW), I agree that this is a mess and probably 2 people. In this case, I don't think undoing the latest merge would clean up the mess.

The best answer we have right now is to create a new James with the correct parents and start moving sources and information over. This is a huge undertaking and we understand it is time-consuming. We hope to eventually have a tool to simplify the process.

We are rolling out a new merge process that we hope will reduce situations like this from happening.

    Thanks again!

I'll have to leave it to the veterans here to know if undoing hte merge is or isn't the best approach, but being new I'm sure not up to the task of fixing it if it will be totally manual.

I can help with sources and knowledge, and as James M of Fayette county is my 3rd great grandfather, I may be a bit closer to this than the average researcher.

i do not recall getting an alert letting me know anyone responded tothis posting, so I'll have to check back as I have time.

@Ray Spurlin Thanks for the response.

I've added you and your ancestor to a list that we will reference as we get closer to having a tool to use to clean up messes like this.

I wish we had a better answer for you.
