Permanent Land Lease

My 5th gr grandpa, Amos Singleton, made application to the court of common pleas of Muskingum County Ohio at their November Term A D. 1816 for permanent lease of one hundred and fifty acres of school land. Section 20/21. Then on Mar 13, 1817 Amos was granted a permanent lease on the land.

I have been using Full Text Search and found the record but still trying to find more records about this land. Wouldn't there be a deed record when he died and it was left to someone else. How do I track this land? What would have happened to the improvements he made on the land? I am lost as to where to turn next. Thanks.

    @Karen Cain Pickett

    The first place I would start is at the Muskingum county Recorders office.

    • Public Records: The county recorder's office in the county where the property is located is the primary place to find land records, including deeds and leases.
    • Search for Lease Agreements: You can inquire at the office if they have records of any existing leases on the property. Some counties might have online portals for searching these records.
    • Title Search: Consider conducting a title search on the property, which can reveal information about any existing leases or encumbrances.

    Although not always the case most Land Leases are for a set time and after the time expires they revert to the original landowner.

    Thank you. I will pursue your suggestions the the recorder's office and online. Thanks again, Karen
