How do I search German newspapers for obituaries?

There is no "genealogy bank" type of thing, but there are a lot of papers online. A couple of things about "obituaries". They don't exist in the format that is common in the US. They are called Traueranzeigen and give the name of the deceased, death, and burial information, sometimes birth date and place, and names of relatives [not always]. Look at this database http://familienanzeigen.genealogy.net/ for examples. In the Catholic tradition there are also funeral cards; CompGen also has a database of those as a subset: http://www.familienanzeigen.org/totenzettel.php?PID=551
Look in the digital libraries for your area of interest and larger regional ones as well. See http://wiki-de.genealogy.net/Portal:DigiBib/Andere_Digitale_Bibliotheken
Another good resource for newspapers includes WikiSource https://de.wikisource.org/wiki/Hauptseite
This page includes links to newspapers in various countries https://de.wikisource.org/wiki/Zeitung
Depending on what you are looking for, there are other specific Wikisource pages with links. If you would like suggestions, please tell us about your research area, time period, people, and what you are trying to find.

Thanks, those are great pointers.
I'll come back to this thread after I check out the links.
Some quick comments right now-
I have my own collection of maybe 500 funeral cards that I've already uploaded as memories and attached to the corresponding people.
Next step is create sources using them.
My family is from the Unterfranken district in Bayern. I know of the Main-Post newspaper.
I have some one of my lines back to 1650, the others don't go much past 1850's. Most of my family lives in Germany now.
Thanks again.
Richard
