I’m pleased to join the Descendants of the Indian Subcontinent Research community and look forward to contributing and learning!

As my children are half Indian, I am currently researching Hindu pilgrimage records and utilizing multiple tools and services to support this work. In my experience, Google Translate has been about 99% accurate when working with my mother's family records in Spanish. I would like to help improve the quality of Hindi translations—especially for Hindu pilgrimage documents, which often contain a wealth of family history data from India.

As I receive edits and corrections from professional translators and language tutors, I submit these updates to Google Translate in hopes of raising the quality of Hindi translations to the same standard as those in Spanish.

I’m also interested in understanding how I can share this information in a way that supports future efforts by FamilySearch to index historical documents from the Indian subcontinent. While I understand this is not currently a focus, I am hopeful that as technology advances, indexing Hindu pilgrimage records will become feasible within the next few years. I would like to contribute meaningfully to that process in any way I can.

I am eager to benefit from the collective knowledge and experience shared within this group.

Here’s an example of how I’ve been translating the records: I’ve found Family Search entries for individuals who share the same last names as my children’s grandparents — one record even traces back 10 generations! Unfortunately, none of these entries include dates or locations, so it’s difficult to determine if they are directly connected to my children’s ancestors.

For these records, I enter a record that mentioned a visit to a Hindu temple as a “custom event.” Most of the pilgrimage records also include the place the family traveled from, which likely indicates their place of birth.

Do FamilySearch centers in India have volunteers who assist people with entering records and documenting details correctly? I’d be happy to volunteer remotely to help individuals learn how to more thoroughly document their family history.

Also, I would appreciate any feedback on how I can improve the "memories" before I upload them to family search with the corresponding family tree.

@Jennifer Maria Errande thank you for your help. Here is a link to current FS centers in India. Hours and staffing will have to be looked at individually. https://locations.familysearch.org/en/in
