COLLINS DNA GEDmatch group in the works!
Hello Cousins!
My name is Kristy (name removed) Edenfield.
I descend proudly through the Gilmer Co. WV./VA.> Lewis Co. VA > Harrison Co., VA> Hampshire Co. VA.>Ireland COLLINS line beginning with my great grandmother, Hallie Stay> Oliver Commodore "Perry", Jr.> Oliver "Commodore" Perry>William>George>John.
I've been researching my family lines since I was 12.. 44 years now (YIKES!). I traveled throughout VA, WV & the Gulf Coast nabbing as many clues as I could. Two trips to Utah came next, and then the flood of online data started occurring (I've been a grateful member of FamilySearch since it's formation & use it daily!!) 2012 was when I submitted my 1st DNA test. However, no matter how hard I try, ALL of my Irish lines (and there are many) seem to dead-end at the American coast.
But then...
Two months ago, i 'discovered' ftDNA (familytreedna), which I'm sure many of you already know about. They have specific surname groups, ethnic groups, clan groups, regions, etc.
ANYWAY...
I tried to join the COLLINS group, but it was a no-go because they only took Y-DNA. However, unlike the rest of the groups, this group's administrator doesn't even allow non-members view the DNA results. On the results, the members show (if they know) their earliest known COLLINS ancestor. It would have been a TREMENDOUS tool for anyone else who had that same ancestor in their own database if the results were viewable. (I've used this to make contact with the donor & further my research on numerous occasions). I emailed her personally with my plea, but her response was cold at best.
I have also joined GEDmatch, which actually takes DNA analysis to an entirely different level. Just like ftDNA, there are surname, clan, area groups, etc. It's required that the groups have a FB or another discussion page attached to talk about your matches with others. My other (stubborn) Irish lines are finally making progress after almost 25 years of brick walls because of these 2 sites. However, GEDmatch doesn't have a COLLINS page.... yet!
I contacted GEDmatch support yesterday about the process of creating a COLLINS page. They responded promptly.
We need at least 20 kits willing to join the group. This means, if you are already on GEDmatch & you want to join... great! Please let me know ASAP!
If your DNA is not on GEDmatch yet and you're interested in joining the upcoming COLLINS group and other groups, I invite you to do research on what the site is all about and decide accordingly.
**Note...currently, only AUTOSOMAL DNA is being accepted to GEDmatch. That being said, the matches I am getting through my father's lines (even though I am female), including my maiden name (name removed), have been astonishing.
And this is all FREE. There is an upgraded plan that I don't possess currently, but will probably need to assist members with matches if the COLLINS group comes to fruition. Again, the GEDmatch website explains all of this, as well as how to upload your DNA file from Ancestry/23andMe or a few other places.
It doesn't matter if you are related to my COLLINS line. THE MORE LINES THE BETTER!
That way this group will be able to connect as many people around the globe as possible!
Let's do this!
