Hi all . I would appreciate any help with a occupation query regarding my 3 x G Grandfather William Airey b 1790 in Kendal Westmoreland UK. I do not know much about him apart from his birth and Wife , who was Ann Airey . So to fill in the gaps can anyone find out what His occupation was in Kendal?. With it being a rural area , I thought it may be weaving or such? Thank you all.

Do you know when he died? Did he appear on a census record (1841 on)? The dominant occupation in rural areas was that of an agricultural labourer.

No direct help I'm afraid, but I did find AIREY entries in 1829 directories for Kendal. Here are the links:

    KENDAL_TOWN_DIR

    KENDAL

History, Directory & Gazetteer of Cumberland & Westmorland, 1829 - Historical Directories of England & Wales - Special Collections

As you will find, there are references to a Jane, Henry and Christopher Airey, who all appear to be connected to flour dealing. There were also two vicars named Airey in the area.

To find their entries rather than scrolling through the page I would use the browser's "Find in page" tool. For the third of the links, the Kendal Directory pages begin at page 657.

I discovered these pages by typing "Kendal Genuki" into the (Google) search engine. This gave me this link:

    GENUKI: Kendal, Westmorland

The GENUKI pages are generally a good starting point for finding what material is available for parishes or counties in England.

I thought I'd take a further look today and found a Family Tree profile, reference MKXY-RPT, that might represent your ancestor. Further, the FreeCEN website has coverage for Kendal of 1841, 1861 and 1871 census returns. However, it appears there were two individuals named William Airey, of roughly the same age, living at Kendal during this period.

Take a look at the page at https://www.freecen.org.uk/search_queries/68179b79c233308cb58171ac?locale=en, which shows, in 1861, the William married to Ann has a listed occupation of "Formerly Mason", but in 1841 as a "Builder". To view the original records, you would need to have a subscription to either Find My Past or Ancestry, but these transcripts (together with what appears to be his Family Tree profile) should be of great help in building a better picture of him.

(By the way, the "other" William Airey appears to have married a MARTHA.)

The record that Paul suggests, MKXY-RPT, has census re ords from 1841 to 1861 attached. However, the death date conflicts with your record of 1863 in Liverpool. The 1851 census describes him as a waller which seems to fit with 1841 and 1861 as noted by Paul.
