This concerns a James Nicholas Chagris, KC48-GXL. Born 14 Dec 1893, in Greece per draft registration card and in Angelokristo, Greece per his wife's, Marina Pappas - (M5X2-****) Declaration of Intention. This Declaration of Intention shows her being born in Athieka, Corinth, Greece on the 28 May 1901. Per a passenger list her last name is Papanicolaou. Again, per her Declaration of Intention James came to the USA thru NY, NY on 30 March 1909. I have looked for his arrival but have had no success. I was hoping that the ships manifest would show his Greek last name which I presume was different than Chagris.

I found the passenger list of his arrival to the US, which I attached to your relative. He arrived in the 2nd of April 1909 in N.Y. His last residence, was Angelocastro (Αγγελόκαστρο(ν) in Greek), Corinth, Greece, where he had also been born. His closest relative was his mother Caterina (Κατερίνα in Greek), in Angelocastro. Probably his father had already been dead. He was going to Aberdeen, South Dakota to find his brother Mike Tsagres. There is a "I" living in Aberdeen, SD, in 1910 (Census). He was born in Greece, in 1892. I think he is the same with James Chagris.

As for the name of the father of James, even if we think we don't have his name recorded, it's easy to be extracted from the records: Greeks don't have middle names. Their "middle" name is their fathers' first name. Also they tend to give the name of their fathers in the first male child. So James Nicholas Chagris' father name was Nicholas (Nikolaos), and he gave this name to his son, Nicholas.

Tsagris (Τσαγρής) family name is pretty common in the prefecture of Corinthos till today. After a quick research, I found one Evangelos Chagris (Ευάγγελος Τσαγρής) who was murdered in Angelokastro during the Greek Civil War (1944).

I wish I was helpful with your research.

    Have a good night
