What's with the big red plus sign that started appearing next to some of my ancestors?

Some of my ancestors, such as P9SJ-155, now show a big red plus sign where the photo normally appears. The plus sign isn't coming from a memory. Where is it coming from and what does it mean?

Profile photos do not need to come from a memory. They can be directly uploaded to the profile page. When that is done, they do not get added to the memory page.

Some users, when there is no photo for a person, will add something else as a profile photo such as a headstone, a picture of the place the person lived, a crest, or whatever. The appropriateness of some items can be debated. One of the more common things to add is a flag and it looks like that is what another user has done. Why that user used what appears to be the English flag for people who lived and died in Sweden is a bit of a mystery. It does look like the user is using this to mark his or her direct ancestors since one child in a family seems to have it. That makes the landscape pedigree look like this:

Whether this marking of one's own direct lines in a shared family tree and thereby making everyone else's pedigrees look a bit strange is a bit of a questionable practice.
