location in England question

Hi!

According to different records, my 3rd great grandfather was either born in Cottingham, Northampton, England circa 1790 or Whistleton, Northumberland, England circa 1790. Can anyone help me to understand the connection between these two places? I would like to find the parents of this ancestor and having his correct birthplace might help.

Whistleton, Northumberland does not exist. There are no places there with a similar sounding name that I can fiind. Also Northumberland and Northampton are a long way apart.

Cottingham, Northampton does exist.
