A sea Captain in the Family
I have a Merchant Navy sea Captain in my family but need some help to find out more about him . Alfred Hender my G G Uncle was born in 1893 in Fowey Cornwall UK . Apparently he was the only Seaman in this family . I know He was on the Nova Scotia (uk) ship as Captain in 1942 and he Died at sea . So can anyone track Alfred down and give me any background info of this Man and his life please? Thank you all .

Where have you searched for your G G Uncle? Did he immigrate to the United States? Did he marry? If you have the name of his wife, you may find more information under her. Have you looked for places the others in his family settled? Have you tried Family Search Wicki? I hope some of these ideas help you in learning more about your uncle. Have Fun searching.

I just found him on the CWGC website. Go to the page at https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2789374/alfred-hender/ , although perhaps you are aware of this detail and want to find further details of his life. The record itself shows the names of his wife and parents.
His 1911 census record is found at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XW97-7G4?lang=en where he is found at Teignmouth, Devon with his brother George. You might wish to visit Find My Past to see if he can be found in 1921 census and 1939 National Register records, although he may have been at sea and missing from the latter. Merchant Navy records can also be found on FMP and he may be referenced in TNA / Discovery records. I've only taken about 10 minutes to get to the above records (a bit pushed for time this morning), but his 1901 census record should appear on FamilySearch, but it's worth trying the Ancestry census records if not.
Update - Again, I'm obviously not sure how much you already know about him, but have found his birth registration on the GRO website (registered Sep 1892 Qtr. St Austell Reg. Dist. - mother maiden name PETTY) and marriage to Jane Ann Roberts (registered Sep 1922 Qtr. West Derby, Lancashire R.D.). As with his own marriage, his parents marriage registration is also found on the FreeBMD website: Mar 1874 Qtr. St Austell R.D.: William Richard Hender and Annie Eliza Petty.
Finally, there is a death notice on the BNA website at https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search/results?basicsearch=%22alfred%20hender%22&phrasesearch=alfred%20hender&retrievecountrycounts=false&sortorder=score
I do not have a subscription, so cannot read the full article, but even with limited access the detail shown is quite good. I have not had time, but if you search further there may well be further newspaper articles referencing him or other family members.
From just a brief look at the FreeBMD website, it appears it should not be too difficult in tracing Alfred's family details, in conjunction with reference to earlier census records, use of the GRO website, etc.
