Why can't I use Mauch Chunk, Carbon, PA as a standardized place?
Only Jim Thorpe PA can be used. Mauch Chunk Borough and East Mauch Chunk became Jim Thorpe, PA in 1954. Other old names for places are available (with dates of existence). In fact, East Mauch Chunk is available for use. If Jim Thorpe is used for a place name before 1954, then the data quality score says that it is incorrect. But the correct name can't be used as a standardized place.
This is important to me, since a large part of my family is from Mauch Chunk.

Because the Places Database is incomplete. It looks like this should be a relative easy fix for the Places team. I'd give it a day or two and see if one of these sees this and makes some adjustments for you.

Looks like a places editor had a free morning. I just checked again and there are now more options.
Check out this search in the Places database: https://www.familysearch.org/en/research/places/?text=Mauch%20Chunk%2C%20Pennsylvania (It might take a day or so to sync into Family Tree.)

I don't believe "West Mauch Chunk" was ever a place (despite what Wikipedia says). The censuses call it either Mauch Chunk or Mauch Chunk borough. I lived in what we called "Upper Mauch Chunk" which in the censuses is 3rd Ward and is now referred to as The Heights in Jim Thorpe. East Mauch Chunk, Mauch Chunk borough, and Beaver Run merged to form Jim Thorpe. (I checked with my cousin who is a life-long resident and he says there was no West Mauch Chunk.) Thanks.

So, in other words, when Mauch Chunk was divided into two boroughs, the eastern chunk (sorry about the pun) got a new name but the western chunk just kept the original name? Place names are confusing even when the references are accurate. Fortunately, they can be fixed.

If Wikipedia is right on that part of the history, the west side of the river was founded as Mauch Chunk. The east side of the river was settled later and called East Mauch Chunk.
