can the family group tree and the family search treee be automatically linked?
As I understand it information from the familysearch tree can be added to the familygroup tree but not vice versa. I don't understand this restriction. It would also be helpful if one could automatically update both trees whenever new information is added.

I think it's best to think of the Family Group Tree as being expressly a place for living people. You can then link those people to Deceased people who are in the FamilySearch Tree. For this reason, it may not have been a priority for the developers to allow copying people from Group to FamilySearch.
I would not try to put any Deceased person in Family Group Tree. And as people die, I would merge them into any previous instances of them in the FamilySearch Tree.
I think of the Family Group Tree as a solution for the mess created when dozens of people (such as descendents) are maintaining a record for the same person. Family Group Tree lets them share their work.Personally, I made my group aimed at all the descendents of an aging couple. When they die and are "trickled up" to the FamilySearch Tree, the group can be split for appropriate privacy or kept together.

@Terence Finnegan I think you are asking about copying information from one tree (family group tree) to another tree (FamilySearch Tree). If so, yes, you can copy from the FamilySearch Tree into a family group tree. You can do this over and over, as often as you need to add information.
You cannot copy from the family group tree back into the FamilySearch Tree or from one family group tree into another family group tree. However, the engineers are working on a way to copy information between trees in these ways. Please be patient as they continue to build this tool.
