Basel BS - school records - 1900-1920 - Stohler - Rudolf
I'm working on a Family History book. My GF, Dr. Rudolf Stohler (5 December 1901) was born and raised in Basel, Switzerland. From the time he was about 20 years old until his death in 2000 in Berkeley, CA I have plenty of records and stories of him. His childhood, on the other hand, I have virtually nothing. Are their sources (stories, photos, newspaper articles, etc) for school records/graduations for the Basel area during his childhood? If so, where would I find those? If not, where could I find out where he would have gone to school and what education would have been like for him? I'm not at all familiar with the educational system in Basel, Switzerland. If they started at about the age 6 in elementary school then that would have probably been about 1907. From his own description, WWI was very hard on Basel and he didn't have enough to eat. 1914 would have made him about 13 which in the US would either middle school or first year in High School. I'm not familiar with what the Basel equivalent would be. I'd like very much to know how to give my family the full biography of my GF's life in Basel. Thank you for your help!

Basel is not my area of research, especially not in the 20th century. I therefore recommend you post your question on Geneal-Forum: a very active member there is a specialist for research in Basel. Registration is free and without obligation - and English is fine: unless you want to expand on it you could just copy&paste your question above.

To all interested in research in the Basel region during late 19th & early 20th centuries.
K. Angel had followed my suggestion to ask her question on Stohler von Arboldswil BL on Geneal-Forum. This has resulted in an interesting and fruitful discussion, describing search strategies and less well known resources. Consequently this may well be of interest to other researchers active in the region - irrespective of the Stohler family.
Whilst Rudolf Stohler's parents (and therefore he himself) were citizens of Arboldswil (Basel-Landschaft) he was born and grew up in Basel-Stadt, son of a shop owner dealing mainly with tobacco products.
