GEDCOM Help
I haven't worked in my genealogy software for years. Instead, I have been adding photos and data to the FS public tree while looking for online software to put my 20-something years of research to give to other family members instead of GEDCOMs eventually. I hope the new CET program is the answer.
The instructions don't explain how to manually enter ancestor names one at a time when starting a new tree file in my CET account. So, I need a GEDCOM.
Here are my questions.
#1
Is it acceptable to create or update a small family file, convert it to a GEDCOM, upload it, and build it up in the test CET account? Must the file have a certain size or a certain amount of names and data?
#2
Can I download some of my family research from the FS site to a GEDCOM and upload it to my CET account? Or select specific FS data and transfer it to my CET account?
If I have to, I can open old genealogy files, update them, and create GEDCOMs, but the files will not contain as much data as I have added to my FS research.
I am open to other ideas. Has anyone else had this issue? FYI, my software is an open-source program called GRAMPS, which can create a GEDCOM.
Thanks,

Update. I created a small, three-person GED and uploaded it. One ancestor was created three times. Now to find out how to delete two.

At the moment I think that GEDCOM import is the only way to start a CET. I think you're 'mini' GEDCOM import [clever idea] has you started at least. Hate to have you start from scratch when it sounds like you've done a fair amount of work already.
Not sure I understand #2….. When you say 'my FS research' are you referring to your contributions to the FamilyTree? If so, FamilyTree and CETs aren't yet capable of using a PID on FamilyTree to create a 'cloned', CET-specific PID along with its Sources, Notes, etc
Hard to say in your case, but if the 'old genealogy files' are already in your GRAMPS I'd go that route. Updating/adding info once you get everything into a CET
Hope that works for you
btw… your Community user name makes is hard/impossible to 'flag' my post using the 'At Sign' + user name which allows for your notification.

A few quick responses:
1) As you discovered, you can use as small a GEDCOM file as you wish to create a tree.
2) Regarding the 3 persons, we would need to look at the specific Gedcom file. You can do this yourself by opening it up in a text editor or even importing it into a different genealogy software package and seeing if somehow it actually specifies 3 persons.
3) There is no current way to duplicate the data already in the Family Tree dataset into a CET using the website. There are however a couple considerations:A) Many genealogy software packages have API integration with the Family Tree (I'm not sure if Gramps is one of those). A user "could" use a 3rd party software package (like the free version of RootsMagic, or any integrated software, to pull down the portion of Family Tree that they desire onto the desktop. Then they can (today) create a new CET via a Gedcom export. In the near future most leading software will have API integration with the CET system and will be able to create a new CET from within the software package AND keep the CET and the desktop tree in sync when a user makes changes in either.
B) FamilySearch will shortly be matching CETs vs each other and vs Family Tree. Users will be alerted to high confidence tree2tree person matches. Users will be able to align family groups across trees to evaluate "Are these people those people?" using all available genealogical data and sources. If they are, users will be able to copy people, data, sources, notes and memories from one tree to the other.

@♥ ♥ Thank you for testing our early release CET. Another solution might be to get a free ancestry account and upload a few generations from your FamilySearch Family tree into that account and then download a gedcom file to upload into CET. Please watch the "announcements" at the top of the CET group page to keep up on the progress of this issue. Again, thank you for testing this product.
