Alternatives to Archion
In a discussion in 2019, Baerbel J suggested asking about specific records we might be trying to access from Archion, but not wanting to pay for a pass. (See below) I am searching for a burial record for a young boy who apparently died before his family emigrated from Bergedorf Ganderkesee A. Delmenhorst, Oldenburg. His name was
Heinrich Klevemann, Birth 5 OCT 1887 • Bergedorf / Gks., Ganderkesee, OL., NI, D.
When his family emigrated in 1892, he was not with them. I have searched https://www.auswanderer-oldenburg.de/ , where he is listed as an emigrant with his family, but on the passenger list https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/8679/images/mdt844_2-0238?ssrc=&backlabel=Return
for the Karlsruhe, he is not listed. And a few months after the family arrived in Nebraska, they had another baby boy, whom they named Heinrich Wilhelm (but they called him Willie H.). That feels like the family naming the new baby in memory of the Heinrich they lost.
Either he died at sea, or died before they left Bergedorf. But if he had died and been buried at sea, he would still have been listed as having boarded the Karlsruhe, no?
As Bergedorf was a very small farming community, it did not have a church of its own. The parents were married in Ganderkesee, Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, Germany in 1879.
Where could I find a possible death or burial notice for little Heinrich, if not on Archion?
Thank you in advance.

As far as accessing its records some other way goes, the answer is "That depends". The material that was also filmed by FamilySearch at some point may be be accessible at a family history center, on the original films at centers that still have them, through Ancestry [which can be accessed without charge at family history centers and larger public libraries] and some other websites.
Then there is always the option of a visit to the record-holding archive in Germany. But compared to the travel costs, an Archion subscrption is a bargain, and much more convenient at that.
Please feel free to ask questions about records from specific areas or archives. We can probably tell you if they are found elsewhere as well.
