San Francisco Probate (1915) of Jules / Julius Klein
I am trying to squeeze as much information out of the records as I can for a Jules (aka Julius) Klein, b abt 1868 in Alsace (allegedly), d 28 Dec 1914, San Francisco.
Someone remotely connected to my tree sued him for breach of promise in 1891 and was awarded damages of $4,000. Conveniently(?) he promptly went bankrupt and thus it appears she never got a cent. Shortly after his death, according to 2 newspaper articles, her lawyers attempted to revive the case in 1915 - I can find no evidence that the case came to court. (This would have been in Santa Barbara Superior Court - I have the 1891 stuff for that).
I was attempting to find his probate papers to see if there was any clue about what happened.
I found him on Film 4879266, "Probate index, no. 2949 v. 1-2 Haa-Kz, 1906-1926", image 170.
- His two adjacent entries are
18402 / Jules Klein / alias / D (for Deceased) / (Register) 37 / (Page) 402 - 18402 / Julius Klein / alias / D (for Deceased) / (Register) 37 / (Page) 402
(There is also a 15869 Julius Klein a couple of lines above but the one I am interested in is 18402)
Using the Register number mentioned above, I can go to Film 4157288, "Register of actions, probate, vol. 37, case 18301, 1914-1915" (this is for Cases 18301 - 18500)
Page 402 contains the actions for case number 18402 "Jules Klein, also known as Julius Klein and as J Klein, Dec'd", Department 10 (Does anyone know what Department 10 means?)
On this page of the Register of Actions, I cannot see any mention of a will - the page starts with "Petition of Louis Kahn for Letters of Admin[istration] filed". If US terminology matches UK terminology, this suggests to me that there was no will - this is plausible as he was still fairly young.
The Actions run from Jan 1915 to Jan 1916.
I cannot find any further Probate details such as a will (if there is one). DGS 7603598 is "Wills, nos. 18201-18423, 1914-1915". But on that film, image 1019 is Case 18399 and the next "will" is image 1042, Case 18403, followed by image 1047, which is Case 18407, i.e. 18402 is missing from that part of the film.
Am I correct in my suspicion that there never was a will for Case 18402?
Either way round, does anyone know how to find any online details of Case 18402? (I'm on the wrong side of the Atlantic for a day trip to San Francisco…)
Thanks
