Recommendation for Reading Material on Types of Farmers
Hello,
Can anyone recommend reading materials, preferably in English, that explains more about different types of farmers? I am aware of FamilySearch's Genealogical Word List, which provides brief definitions of some terms, as well as other dictionaries like Thode's. I am looking for something more in-depth, perhaps a history of agriculture in Germany? Right now, I am wondering what it means when a man was described by Kossat in 1920 but Landwirth in 1923. How have his circumstances changed? I don't think the terms are interchangeable, but perhaps I am wrong. I am sure it depends on time period, location, geo-political factors, etc., and there's probably not one all-inclusive source for information, so I welcome any recommendations.

As you've already noted, there are many terms for farmer in German. You can look up these terms on Wikipedia and get a fuller explanation of the meaning, but many of these articles are in German, so you can use Google Translate to render them into English. Here's an example for Kossat -

and Landwirt -

These articles contain links to other, similar terms as well as helpful links for further reference.
