CO Judicial Records 1930's, Child Custody
Greetings everyone,
I am looking for judicial records on an incident back in 1937/1938. I found a newspaper article (links to Newspapers.com) on the event in Colorado. Here's a summary of the article. My ancestor, Paul W. Glass, and his mother, went to Colorado to see his first child, and infant. He was estranged from his wife (my paternal grandmother) Delpha Leigh Atteberry. She was living with her parents, Aden Rhea & Florence Atteberry. The Atteberry family refused to allow the court order (or custody agreement) visitation and assaulted Paul Glass with a pipe!
Where I need help: Can I find a copy of the Sherriff's report on the incident? Can I retrieve the child custody agreement? As far as I can tell, the Atteberry's quickly left Colorado and moved to Oregon, presumably to avoid prosecution.
Any suggestions are recommended!
Many thanks,
Penny

Good morning. The best 1st step is to contact the County court system in Colorado where the crime occurred, unless it was a misdemeanor then contact the local police department for arrest records.
An example of where to go is if the crime occurred in Denver County assistance in locating the arrest can be found below. Unfortunately you would probably need to know the county or you will have to do numerous searches. Due to the date of the crime it may not be on the automated court systems and you would have to request a hand search which may cost a fee. The same idea goes for the court ordered agreements. Go directly to the county involved.

I also found some training on how to locate court records in the US.

Hi @Penny6404. I found an article with pictures and a lot of information about what happened and the situation. That may give you a better timeline for getting other records. The article starts on page 1, but continues on page 6, column 3.

Yes FamilySearch Wiki is an excellent place to get started in researching anything to do with your Family in Colorado. If you start at the Wiki page for Colorado court records it may lead you to the right place, but you need to know where they lived at the time, or in which county the court action took place. If you started by researching the census records, or draft records (16 October 1940 in Greeley Co.) you may find the proper county to start looking in. Check marriage records it may also be a hint as your couple were married in Clear Creek, Co. If you take this information to the FamilySearch Wiki page for Colorado you can drill down into the counties, possibly, look in Denver county, which was mentioned to start with and try locating further records in the court or police systems. I did see you don't have a death date for Paul, by locating this you may be able to possibly find further information in an obituary. You can find Paul's death information on a SSN document. Hopefully this will be enough to get you started on the investigation in finding and revealing the history of your ancestors. There is a lot more information out there to assist you in your search, but it will require some investigation and possibly some patience, but you will probably find it is a fun journey.
