Bevolkingregister
Collecting Population Registers for my ancestors I look at the records and have a hard time figuring out what year a particular register was taken. I look at the record on a City page and I don't find a year mentioned. Then I go to WieWasWie and Open Archives - at the top of the page Open Archives show Registration taken in 1913:
Registration in 1913 in 's-Gravenhage (Netherlands)Registered
- Jan Frederik van Merkesteijn, born on January 18, 1903
- Anna Hendrika Smulders, born on October 24, 1908 in Rotterdam

Then I go over on WieWasWie and it shows this:
Jan Frederik van MerkesteijnBirth date18-01-1903RegisteredAnna Hendrika SmuldersBirth date24-10-1908Place of birthRotterdamEventRegistratieEvent place's-GravenhageDocument typeBevolkingsregisterHeritage institutionHaags GemeentearchiefInstitution placeDen HaagCollection regionZuid-HollandArchive0354-01Registration number1189Registration date1913Document place's-GravenhageCollectionBevolkingsregister gemeente Den HaagBookHaags Bevolkingsregister (gezinskaarten)
Both of them state that the Registration date was taken in 1913. Well, that can't be true because you look at the 2 people shown, in 1913, Jan is 10 and Anna is 5. This couple was married in 1929, so how can a registration have been taken containing both of them if they are still children.
This is one thing I need help. In order to list as a source in FS you need a year. What year do I add? Where do I look for it? I've looked all over the original and am unable to pinpoint a year. Anyone have any pointers or direction as to how to add these source records in FS and what year to list it.

The problem is likely that you think the register is a census. In the Netherlands we do not have censuses. In a "bevolkingsregister" (population register) arrivals, movements, and departures of persons are registered. In this case it shows that Jan Frederik was there starting at birth and that Anna Hendrika came in from Amsterdam 10 NOV 1926.
I would consider these records primarily a source for birth date and location, so I would record year of birth for the source. Alternatively you can use 1913 and attach it to applicable events fot that person

Thanks for the explanation. I'm starting to understand it, a little. I don't know why I'm having such a hard time. I've read that these cards are Family cards. So, another example. Take this family card,
https://hdl.handle.net/21.12124/CA248CD4E17A44DFA30E49FD1A5937E2
If you look at the card it has Jan Frederick and then Anna. Underneath Anna it lists Wilhelmus Everardus. This is Anna's second husband. So, is this the family card for Jan? or for Anna? (I'm thinking Anna). Given this is a register for The Hague, where would I find the date where this card was written up?

It was the card for Jan Frederik. Anna Hendrika was added in 1926 and switched to the card of Wilhelmus Everardus Laurentius when they married in 1935:

These cards were all created and maintained in the 1913-1939 timeframe:

Thank you so much for this information. I think I'm finally starting to understand how these work. So, just to make sure I understand correctly. Here is my thinking:
When a child is born, a family card is created under their name. Then when they move or get married, have a child the information is added to their personal family card. So, for their whole life the family card continues to be updated. And if they marry, they will have the info on their personal card and the card to whom they marry. I've always been looking for a date-hence the date would be the date of the move, or the marriage or the born child. Is my thinking correct?
One of the links you sent me was for military cards. How does that work? When someone enters the military a card is created for that person and is updated with each change in status or move? My grandfather and some other male relatives were in the military and I would love to find information about them, i.e., where they served, their rank, any battles they might have been in, etc. Would information be found in these cards?
I so appreciate your help with this.

<Is my thinking correct?>
Please see this page (translated by browser if needed) for an explanation of "bevolkingsregister" and this one for "gezinskaart".
