wilhelmshaven records
I have just begun my German family research. One branch was born in Belfort, Wilhelmshaven 1879. Others were born near the area of Wilhelmshaven. They were Protestants. Where would I begin to find records since the usual search method on Family Search has yielded nothing. If I were to Catalogue or look for images, where would I look?

Hi,
Protestant births for Belfort near Wilhelmshaven from the year 1879 should be in the church books of the town "Neuende".
I think these church books can possibly only be accessed via the German page "Archion. de". In order to look at the church books you have to by a pass that is valid for 1 month. They also have protestant church books from Wilhelmshaven on that site.
Kind regards and good luck with your search

How do I access Archion.de? Totally unfamiliar with German research.

Archion.de is a website for Protestant church records in Germany. Like Ancestry, it is a subscription-based site, so you have to pay to get access to the records. This link will take you to the page at Archion describing the various subscription levels available.

Thank you. So it seems that Family Search site isn’t the best source for German records??

FamilySearch is an excellent source for German records, but it doesn't have everything. When that happens, you need to look at alternate sites such as Archion.de for Protestant records, or Matricula (which is free) for Catholic records.
Ancestry and MyHeritage also have a fair amount of German records. And of course, archives in Germany will also have records for the places you're interested in.
