Orphanages in New York
New York Orphans Asyum, Hebrew Orphan Asylum, Brooklyn Orphan Asylum, New York Child Care Association, German Orpanages. This site has links to records, correspondence, Photos, History, case files and much more for many “Organizations” don’t let the name fool you, there’s WAY MORE to see here! It’s not just Jewish Records! The Hebrew Orphan Asylum was created out of the 1860 merger of the Hebrew Benevolent Society and the German Hebrew Benevolent Society following the publicity surrounding the Mortara Affair, in which an Italian Jewish boy was kidnapped and converted by a servant girl. The possibilities of Jewish orphans being cared for by non-Jewish asylums with missionary goals was a major factor that led the two societies to pool resources and open the first Jewish orphan asylum in New York City. The American Jewish Historical Society also holds the records of the other two main Jewish orphanages in New York: Brooklyn Hebrew Orphan Asylumand Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Society, as well as their successor organization, the Jewish Child Care Association of New York. @New York @Germany Genealogy Research @United States Genealogy Research @Family History Research
