Surprise 1920 Drammen Census Find
I recently "found" my grandfather, Albert Herman Wilhelm Talg, in the above mentioned census. Here is the link to that census page:
He was from Germany and this was 3 years before he married my Norwegian grandmother, Elisabeth Mathiesen, from Holmestrand. I have yet to figure how/where/when they met!My question is whether he had to register (like the parish moving in/moving out registers) somewhere when he arrived and took up residence in Drammen, and if so, where might I find this? The attached census card gives his place of residence and employment, but I have no idea when he arrived in Norway and would like to find out. I did find him in passenger lists departing from Hamburg, on 31 Dec 1921 & again on, 16 Sept 1922. I have found no evidence of his travel to Norway in any passenger lists between 1919-1920. He was born in Luneburg, Germany which isn't far from Hamburg, and it seems like that is the port he sailed from consistently.
Does anyone have any ideas? I appreciate any thoughts about this. Thank you for any assistance in solving this mystery.

I'm not seeing any moving in records for that time period in Drammen in Bragernes Clerical district. So it may be difficult to pinpoint when he entered the country. The latest one is in 1918 and he is not on that list. I haven't spent much time in it, but there is a Drammen Folkeregister with moving out index cards. You might consider trying to find him in these years to see when he left Drammen. @
His marriage record in Holmestrand is here in entry no. 1 for 1923. Unfortunately, it seems the moving in records for Holmestrand in those years have not been digitized yet. However, there is some interesting insight to be had from the marriage record. When he married in 1923, Albert was employed as a mechanic by Norsk Aluminumsindustri located at Nordre Klev street in Holmestrand. Elisabet grew up in Holmestrand.
Some ideas for learning more:
- search public newspapers at nb.no for Holmestrand
- see if there is a farm book (bygdebok) for Holmestrand
- reach out to someone from a historical society near Holmestrand, possibly Vestfold Slektshistorielag

@Forrest Emmett: Thank you very much for your ideas about the Drammen Registers; I will take a look through those other interim years between the 1920 census & his marriage. Ah yes, doesn't it always seem just the record set you'd like to see, is the one that isn't digitized(: I like your idea about the historical society. That crossed my mind at one point, but then I never acted on it. You have motivated me to try.
