Looking for Ancestor from "near Metz"

I am looking for potential locations/sources to start looking for this ancestor.

According to an unsigned and undated family-held document written in German, Lodowick was born about 1705 "near Metz", now Moselle, Grand Est, France although we do not know the exact location. His father is said (in the above mentioned document) to have been Peter van Metz. Von Metz? De Metz? We have no other names known for his ancestors.

I am also curious as to your thoughts about what might be considered "near Metz" in that era.
