Interpretation of old birth register records
Hello
Via FamilySearch I found an old parish birth register for my ancestor James Tennent whose birth I noted on the tree as circa 1770. The register is dated 21/02/1773 and comes from the National Records of Scotland. Is the register date the actual birth date or merely the date of record? If the latter can one assume that the record would have been made soon after the birth itself?
Not too sure how to link the image to this question for ease of understanding.
Thank you for any help provided.

To follow on from the above - the question becomes more pertinent as FamilySearch has a source indicating that the birth date is 8 February 1771.
So admittedly I'm at a loss.
Annexing the two pieces of information to this question no doubt will help but I don't know how this is done.

The indexed record on the ScotlandsPeople website shows a "Birth/Baptism Date" of 14/02/1773. The index does not differentiate between births and baptisms, but obtaining a copy of the document should show which of the two it is. If you aren't already aware, after registering at https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ you can use the index (and view many original records) for free, but you need to purchase "credits" in order to view parish record entries, etc.
(I assume you already have obtained the details of his parents being John Tennant and Christian Graham and the parish bring Drymen, Stirlingshire.)
Update - Sorry, I might have the wrong record here. I just found there is another James Tennant birth/baptism for 1773 at ScotlandsPeople, so maybe this is the one that relates to your ancestor:
James Tennant to John Tennant and Elizabeth Straithern 07/02/1773 Slamannan
There are also James Tennant birth/baptism events for 1772. (I did a 1770-1773 period search)
I have also found records on FamilySearch that do not appear to be on the ScotlandsPeople website, but which I have found when checking the microfilms.

BTW - the only record I can find on FamilySearch to match the 8 February 1771 date you reference is an IGI one at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:1:M6X9-V1Q. Is this you you believe to be your ancestor?

Sorry that I appear to have completely misunderstood the identity of the individual who (I assume you know) is your ancestor.
Unfortunately, images cannot be added here at present, which - as you realise - does make it difficult to illustrate exactly the person/record to whom/which you are referring. However, it would help if you could provide URL links to what you have found. For example, I would have liked to have checked out the National Records of Scotland register you have referenced, with the 21/02/1773 date, but am unable to find the page where you saw this.
If you have any further information it might help in establishing the facts about "your" James Tennent, especially as there appear to be a few individuals of that name (Tennent or Tennant) born in Scotland around that time.
BTW - Did you see this page when searching on this website? https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&q.birthLikeDate.from=1771&q.birthLikeDate.to=1775&q.birthLikePlace=Scotland&q.birthLikePlace.exact=on&q.givenName=James&q.givenName.exact=on&q.surname=Tenn%2Ant&q.surname.exact=on&treeref=KC76-P8M
From viewing that page, it appears the James Tennent of Glasgow was born on 17 February 1773 and christened on 21 February 1773. Again, sorry it has taken me so long to directly address your query and provided you with misleading comments !
(Perhaps I missed this record on the ScotlandsPeople website because I just searched on a TENNANT spelling.)
