British India records for Native Indians and Pakistanis
Hi,
I hope everyone is well.
Where can I find birth, death, and marriage records, as well as the register of persons for British India for Native Indians and Pakistanis? As far as I know, the people that I am researching are all Muslims by Religion.
I have checked the records for British India on Ancestry and Findmypast, but they are mainly for Anglo-Indian, British, European Christians and native converts. They do not hold births, marriages and deaths for Hindus, Muslims, etc.
I am researching the record below:
Records of the British in India (also called The British Raj, Crown rule in India or Direct rule in India), 1858 -1947 (89 years)
Thank you for your help

Yes this can be very frustrating. Not many records exist that are easy to access. Many have had to do the leg work to travel and research in person to find information. This is not possible for most people. There are a few facebooks groups including the Genealogical Society of India and Its Diaspora which are forums to ask questions. Sometimes others have info that can help you or at least give you ideas to inspire your search. The work in India and Pakistan is in its infancy compared to some western countries BUT you can make a difference for those who come after you. The traditional family tree is thought to be tall and widening at the top but for you that tree may be very short! I encourage people to start a tree on the program you wish, (geni is a good option for living people) and add EVERY family member you can find. Aunts, uncles, cousins and let them know you are interested. Give everyone copies of family trees for gifts at weddings and birthdays etc. Your tree will become very wide and still be very short. IF ever anyone finds info they will know about you and will share it hopefully. That may be the only way to do this work for now. Add photos and audio or stories and document family recipes and traditions and clothing and EVERYTHING you can. In India right now there is a company digitizing thousands of records and hopefully later this year we will be announcing a beta program for you to search for free. It will just take time. In Pakistan there is no one that we know of. But if you add all those people and save all that information your children and grandchildren will have such a rich heritage to enjoy because of you. AND one day those brick walls will fall…. (The GSID went to India and Pakistan last year and held seminars where we said just what I said above. )

@Umar832 thank you for your question. A really good learning area for India research is the The Family History Guide. Give it a look and let us know what you think:

There is also the FamilySearch Wiki:
