Dear Daisy!
This is your paternal grandmother's sewing, buttonhole and embroidery cloth. The description of the letters: F A C M:
Friederica Anna Catharina Möller,
born November 16, 1829 in Hamburg as the daughter of a vinegar manufacturer Heinrich Möller in Spaldingstrasse. Confirmed at Easter 1844 in St. George's Church.
Your grandmother had a sister Elise, 2 years older, and 4 younger siblings. The two daughters Friederica and Elise had only attended Sunday school for years because they helped their sick mother at home and then, when their mother died early, they also looked after the younger siblings. The sewing cloth was therefore only worked on in Sunday school, and the children only learned reading, writing, arithmetic and biblical history. At the age of 18, Friederica and Elise went to work as maid servants. My mother worked as a nanny in the musician family of Deedrich Krug, whose son, the famous future professor Dr. Arnold Krug, she carried in her arms. It was in this position that my mother married her cousin Heinrich August Ertel on April 4, 1854. My father's mother, which is also your great-grandmother, was called Margarethe née Möller and was the sister of your great-grandfather Heinrich Möller. So Heinrich August Ertel and Friederica Anna Catharina Möller married as cousins. The Möller great-grandparents came from Stapelfeld near Alt-Rahlstedt.
My mother Friederica gave birth to 8 children to her husband from May 24, 1858 to December 10, 1869: Gustav, August, Adele, Alma, Robert, Emil, Maria, Olga. My mother died on January 18, 1882, 4:50 in the morning. My father Heinrich Ertel was born on April 19, 1827 in Hamburg, Alstertor 5 III, son of a goldsmith. After his death he was educated by his uncle Möller in Stapelfeld. Confirmed in the church in Alt-Rahlstedt at Easter 1843. Married with my mother on May 4, 1857 in the St. George's church by the old pastor Dettmer. Died on March 5, 1903 in Hamburg.
