Determining occupation meaning on a record
I'm getting back into this after stepping away for a while, because Archion recently added new church records for parishes I need. (Thank you, Archion!)
I immediately was able to find the birth record for one of my great-great-grandmothers! I've transcribed and translated most of the record, but I'd like to know more about her father's description. I knew her birthdate and birthplace of Wendelstein (that's the parish), so that helped.
It looks like it says: "konigl. Unterthaus? u.[nd] Schloßguthsbesitzers aus der Sorg". Sorg is a small location on the Meyersgaz.org map, near Wendelstein in Bavaria. Deep-L translates that as "royal lower house and estate owner from Sorg".
Can you tell me what that means, exactly, in the social structure?
It's interesting, because a few years ago I found a small notice in a German newspaper online that said this young woman and her fiancée signed a contract that "excluded the community of property in their forthcoming marriage by means of a contract notarized by me today."
Now perhaps I know why! He was a forest overseer at Schwarzenbruck and she apparently was from a higher-ranking family that didn't want her husband to have a share of her property? Does this sound right?
What is the meaning of the "Stadts. N. 28"? Were towns numbered, as well as houses?
Here's the birth/baptism record, as I read it:
p. 174, 1830, Record number 15
(right margin: Sorg, Stadts. N. 28, Haus. N. 1
Anna Barbara, of Johann Michael Kastner, royal lower house and owner of the castle (or estate owner?), from Sorg, and his wife Anna Margaretha, born Kohinn (presumably the female ending ‘inn’) from here, their second child and second daughter,
born 22 March 1830 early between 6 and 7 o’clock, and baptised on the following 28th. Witnessed by Anna Barbara Schemerinn, wife of Johann Schwemer, citizen and master smith (hoof and weapon), from here.
I'm attaching the two parts of the record. It ran onto a second page.
Thank you for your help.

You did very well with your transcription. Some small corrections and additions below in bold. It's not Unterthaus, but Unterthan = subject. The line over the m in "Schwemer" means doubling the m.

born 22 March 1830 early between 6 and 7 o’clock, and baptised on the 28th of the same month. Promised by [i.e. godmother is] Anna Barbara Schemerinn, wife of Johann Schwemer, citizen and master smith (hoof and weapon), from here.

I read the note in the margin as Etats-N. 28; not sure what it refers to.

Thank you, Ulrich!
So "royal subject and estate owner" sounds like a higher social status than my other relations, who were mostly tradesmen. As a daughter, would she have inherited property?
You're right, it definitely looks like "Etats" in this and other records on the page. I've never seen that before on other parish records.

Hello Elda,
I found this homepage of "Schloss Sorg": http://schloss-sorg.com/
There it says (under Geschichte/History):
Later, the "manor house" became the property of various farmers, who were therefore called "castle farmers" or "manor farmers".
.....
In 1853, Johann Michael Scheuerlein, a farmer and timber merchant, bought the estate and used it as a farm. It is still owned by this family today.
So it seems that Johann Michael Kastner was one of the "manor farmers". Yes, it is possible that Anna Barbara inherited property (or got it as a dowry) from her wealthy father.

Oh, thanks for the link. That's very interesting to see the house. I might write to the Schloss Sorg email to see if they have any history about the Kastner family.
Definitely worth the pass I purchased again for Archion!
