Two Fathers in the Birth Record??
Can someone translate the part about the second father? Also, I spell the second father's last name Hering. This is unusual enough in these records that I probably have it wrong. Does anyone have a better spelling?
Translation:
22 October 1673 the child Martin was baptized. Father Georg Schmidt ........ his ...... father, Mathias Hering from Mitteldorf. Mother: Maria. Godfather: Lorentz Schrayer schoolmaster and ....... neighbor in Stannern. Godmother: Catharina, wife of David Hochmuth wagon maker in Stannern.
The name Mathias Hering also appears in Martin Schmidt's marriage record. he is the father of Martin's bride.
Thank you for any help you can offer.

Hi,
It looks to me like the words are: "bey seinem / Schweger Vatter Mathias Hering (??) / ... Schulmeister Und mitnachbar"
"at his father-in-law['s] Mathias Hering (??) / schoolmaster and neighbor [co-habitant, co-neighbor]"
Kind regards

Thank you, and you are right. I gave you the wrong history for Mathias Hering. He is the father in law of Hans Schmidt, not of Martin Schmidt. He could easily be a co-habitant. In my more recent records, house numbers were used. It was easy to see that more than one family lived in some houses.
I have been working in the same books for the same parish for five years and have not seen an entry with this kind of detail.
Thank you for solving the mystery, and doing it so quickly. Now I can put the correct translation into Memories so others can read it.

Hi,
I’m sorry to cause confusion. I put the word “co-habitant” in to make clear the meaning of the German word “mit” but I have not found that “mitnachbar” actually means that the people lived in the same house. It is most likely just another expression for “neighbor”, someone from the community.
Sorry for the confusion!
Kind regards
