Is there central archive/repository for Scottish records?

I'm searching for historical documents-birth, census, land records- from the 1700's to mid-1800's - related to my Maxwell ancestors who immigrated from Lanark, Scotland.

Is there a central archive or repository for such records, such as the National Library of Scotland or the New Lanark Visitor Center? At the Glascow Archives, I can reserve time to look at Scotlandspeople online records, but I can do that from home and have found marriage records but nothing more.

Can you help direct me to a location where I can reserve a date and time to personally view Scottish historical records in Scotland?

You have to identify what the records are and where they are first.

Your central point of access is the National Records of Scotland site on https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/

Then drop down into the various Research sections to find "stuff".

In particular note https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/catalogues-and-indexes from where one can access 3 sets of catalogues:

• Search the National Records of Scotland online catalogue (stuff at the central NRS in Edinburgh)
• ​Search the NRAS online register (stuff known to be in private hands)
• Search the Scottish Archive Network catalogue (stuff at local archives)

Here is the link to ScotlandsPeople The ScotlandsPeople website is the official Scottish Government site for searching government records and archives.

It is used by hundreds of thousands of people each year to apply for copies of official certificates and to research family history, biography, local history and social history.  

In the site you have access to the statutory registers of births, marriages, deaths, and so on; census returns; church records; valuation rolls; and legal records from Scotland's courts of law.
