Finding records…

Is it possible to find civil or church records for ancestors at the local village/town/city level in Hungary (Slovakia and Romania as well) if I physically go to the locality?

These are some of the places my ancestors lived: Devavanya, Paks, Nyiregyhaza, Kecskemet, Sahy, Krupina, Nagyvarad, Ipoly-Hidveg, Hont and Budapest.

I am planning a trip to Hungary this spring. It is a once in a lifetime trip so I want to use the time there as effectively as I can.

Would hiring a local historian/genealogist be my best option in finding records? How would I go about doing that?

I would appreciate any insights as to how I would accomplish my goal to find records and learn more about my ancestors.

Thank you!

    Dear Deanna:

Since you are planning a visit to Hungary, you might want to do a free 20-minute Consultation. This can be done by:

    1. Going to the main "Community" page
    2. Clicking on "Free Research Consultation"
    3. Going to "Europe"
    4. Finding "Hungary" and clicking on that
    5. Then going through the various stages of booking the free 20-minute appointment that is online.

Please feel free to ask the question in this group by:

    1. Clicking on "Discussions
    2. Clicking the down arrow and clicking "Ask A Question"
    3. Then please be specific in your question

There is also the Wiki https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Hungary_Genealogy.

We wish you much luck in your venture.
