Translation of Swedish surname
This birth announcement of Maria Christina Kindstrand lists godparents as Miner Carl Fredr[ik] Lemaw (I believe this is actually Leman as I have found this person in other documents) and farmhand Petter XXXXX at Bersbo. Can't figure out Petter's surname. Also, I think the maid Johanna is Knutström. Still working on her. Further thoughts? Any suggestions would be most grateful. Thanks. J.

I read the godparents as
- Grufarb[etaren] Carl Fredr[ik] Leman
- Dr[ängen] Petter Orrhane
- Hust[ru]n Maija Lisa Leman
- Pig[an] Johanna Knutström
PS: orrhane means (male) grouse in English.

Dear Ulrich.
Yes, thank you for the names and for the very interesting definition of Orrhane. I’ve been working with that surname too but I can not find any record of the name Petter Orrhane in two sets of Household Examination Rolls (from 1813 to 1820) or in Family Search. I believe Petter was a FAN (friend, associate, or neighbour) of the Kindstrand family but his existence still eludes me. J.

I feel silly; I might have found Petter Orrhane. I went back to Family Search and instead of various permutations and abbreviations (and a mispelling!) to try to draw the name out, I put in the specific name. I came up with one person who seems to have gone with several different names (Anders for Petter; Carlsson/Carlson for Orrhane, etc.), which might explain why I could not find him in the Household Examination Rolls. The interesting thing is that his wife has the last name of Bergquist, which is a rare surname in my family tree but does show up briefly. So I think I have found a track to follw. Thank you Ulrich. J.

Orrhane can be a "soldatnamn" (soldier's name). There are five men with that name in the soldiers' registry (https://soldat.elektronikhuset.it/soldatregister/search.en.aspx), one of them with the first name Per which is just another form of Petter (https://soldat.elektronikhuset.it/soldatregister/dbrecord.sv.aspx?id=452766). Carlsson may be his patronym.
Edit: This Per died already 1716, so not identical.
