As an Ochsenknecht he's specifically in charge of the oxen.
Johann Carl Haker, wailand [also seen in records as weiland and has the meaning of former or deceased] day laborer
*A great online dictionary is http://www.woerterbuchnetz.de/cgi-bin/WBNetz/wbgui_py?sigle=DWB&lemid=GO00739. It's all in German, but you can google translate the entries into English.

Thanks so much; in this case, I couldn't even read the script for the word wailand/weiland. I am trying very hard; I bought the book: "If I can you can decipher Germanic records," but I am still having a difficult time. If you have any recommendations for help with that, I'd love it. I'm feeling like I am probably reading over/not recognizing records that I'd like to see! Thanks again; I so appreciate your help. Faye.

For learning to read the handwriting you might also try watching the following 3 part series on the old German script: https://www.familysearch.org/ask/learningViewer/375. There's also a handout attached that you can complete.
This isn't an easy thing to read, but it will come with much practice and patience.
