Where exactly do you click to "open family tree"? Do you use a browser bookmark, or do you start at www.familysearch.org (the home page) and click Family Tree - Tree from there, or something else?
For me, the latter procedure produces a tree view of whatever type I used last, centered on me. However, if I start from some other FS page and use that same Family Tree - Tree menu item, I more often get the exact chart view that I used last, that is, it's centered on whoever I was working on, not on me. I don't use this procedure often enough to have figured out any pattern to it.
One "path" that should always result in a chart centered on you is to go to Recents and click the tree-stublet icon ("View Tree") next to your name, which should always be at the top of the list. If you were last working on descendancy, then the result will be a very short (and useless) descendancy chart for you, but you can switch to the fan chart or whichever pedigree view you prefer using the selector button/dropdown at the top right.
