1) abwesend = absent / abgeschieden = deceased, could be divorced. Now what is the meaning of "wach" in the context? Could be connected to wach = awake or Wache = guard service (likely in the military sense). He can't do service being deceased, however - would it be wake coma? I have never seen this in a record mid-19th century. I can't explain "wach" in connection with a divorce … therefore I have asked on https://www.geneal-forum.com/phpbb/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=32826. 2) Vorimholz is not an independent place of citizenship. Affolter have been citizens of Grosaffoltern since before 1800.

Thank you for your help. I will join the forum and follow the discussion. I have suspected that Jakob served in the military based on what other records include. I do know that Anna remarried in 1861. One of the records for this marriage include "Abgeschiedene/:Scheidbrief d.d. 1856. III. 6. Aarberg"

This is an important additional information: answers part of the question ;-). I have added this info to the question on geneal-forum.
Once you are registered you are also welcome to post your own questions, best describe your present state of knowledge and ask the questions stemming from this. Please, keep in mind that we discuss only single families (defined by name and place of citizenship) in any topic - but all questions relating to this family in the same topic (e.g. "Affolter von Grossaffoltern BE"). If details on a related (e.g. by marriage) family are to be discussed, a new topic should be started (e.g. "Lauper von ...); these topics can then be linked to each other. The forum is multilingual ... English is fine!

Another geneal-forum member has solved the mystery: it doesn't read wachabwesend but landsabwesend: absent abroad.
